Why do cats vomit?

Sad and sick tabby cat

Vomiting is a symptom that worries all of us who live with cats a lot. It is really a very unpleasant experience to see our best friends have a hard time. But in order for us to help them, we have to know what is the reason that they have been forced to expel the food.

So let's see why do cats vomit and what we can do to prevent it from happening again.

Have eaten too much

It is one of the most common causes, especially if our cats are gluttons (as is the case of one of mine  ). Just like it can happen to us after a food binge, the stomach has not done well and then in a while the body reacts causing nausea to the furry ones so that they vomit.

After having emptied the stomach, they will return to their normal life, so in principle we do not have to worry. Of course, from now on you have to try to give them only the amount of food they need; no more no less.

Have any food allergies

When poor quality food is given to them, that is, with cereals and by-products (beaks, skin, and other parts that no one would eat), what often happens is that the digestive system of cats cannot assimilate it and causes vomiting.

To avoid this, you have to give them a diet as natural as possible, such as the Barf, Summum Diet, or if we prefer, feed such as Applaws, Acana, Orijen, Taste of the Wild, among others.

They have changed their diet very quickly

Although there are cats that do not feel bad about more or less abrupt feeding changes, there are others that do. If that's the case with yours, It is highly recommended that you introduce more and more »new» food, and less and less of the »old» one., but always in no rush.

In general, the »calendar» to follow is:

  • First week: 75% food »old» + 25% food »new»
  • Second week: 50% food »old + 50% food» new »
  • Third week: 25% food »old» + 75% food »new»
  • From the fourth week: 100% new food

They have eaten something they shouldn't or are sick

These two possible causes are different from each other, but several of the symptoms are common between them. Whether cats eat something they shouldn't be eating (whether it's raw or poisoned) or they're sick, In addition to vomiting, they may have seizures, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, among others..

If we suspect that they are not well, you have to take them to the vet as soon as possible.
