Hairless cats are animals that attract everyone's attention. Many people adore them. And, despite the fact that they need much more care than those whose body is protected by one or two layers of hair, they are just as affectionate as even the most sociable European feline (and there are those who would say that they are even more so).
But What is the origin of hairless cats? Are they a work of nature or, rather, of the human being?
The answer to that question, although it may surprise, is the following: It is about cats that are born naturally without hair. And it is that hairless, hairless or bald cats have appeared throughout history and it is more than likely that they continue to appear. However, the hairless cats that we know today are like this due to a recessive natural genetic mutation that occurred in the 60s in Canada, probably the devon rex.
From then on the breeders decided to fix this characteristic to form a new breed. What they could not foresee is that the kittens that were born would also end up having a high probability of having dental, nervous system or heart problems, despite the fact that they interbred, thus losing genetic variability.
Despite everything, the number of people who love hairless cats is only growing today. In fact, the Sphynx breed is established in both Europe and the United States. Of course, due to its youth and its rarity, the price is high: between 1800 and 2500 euros. In addition, it must be borne in mind that they are animals that must receive special care, such as protection against the sun, not letting them go outside, taking them to the vet for periodic check-ups, and of course giving them a lot of love.
