All about clumping cat litter

Clumping cat litter

Choosing a type of sand is not always easy, because although it is true that in the supermarket they sell ... it is also true that the quality is very, very low, especially if we compare it with others on the market, among which is the agglomerating sand for cats

Although the price is higher than that of the supermarket, in the end it comes out much more profitable. But, What is it like and what are its advantages?

What is clumping cat litter?

It is a type of sand composed of bentonite - a binder clay - of small grain and quite light in weight. Its main characteristic and the one that is making it so popular is that, when the animal relieves it, it forms into a ball that is very easy to remove, thus leaving the rest of the sand clean and without bad odors.

In addition, depending above all on the brand, it is hygienic also with the cats themselves, since there are almost no remains stuck between their fingers.

What are its advantages and disadvantages?

I have been buying clumping litter for my cats for several years, so everything I am going to tell you now is the result of my experience (well, theirs  ):

Advantages

  • It lasts a lot. I have 4 cats and a 10kg bag easily lasts a month for me. Before, when I used another type of low quality sand, I had to change all of it every 5 days.
  • It is very clean. When you have so many cats, they themselves confirm day in and day out that they need the litter box to be perfectly clean. With this type of arena they are happy, and so am I.
  • Absorb odor. It is true that not everything, but enough so that you can approach the sandbox and clean it comfortably.
  • Great value for the price. A 4kg bag of the cheapest sand costs between 0,80 and 1 euro, but you have to throw it all away after 3 days or so. A 10kg bag of clumping litter, the cheapest I have found, costs about 7 euros and lasts well for a month if you have four cats like me, or much more if you only have one.

Drawbacks

  • May contain dust. It will depend on the brand, but if you have a dust allergy or suspect that your felines may have it, it is a problem.
  • Higher price than supermarket sand. It is so, but the quality is not the same.
  • Cats get pimples between their toes. Again, it will depend on the brand, but some stick to them and, when they come out of the tray, they can leave traces around the house (nothing that can't be removed later  ).
